In 2019 we declared a biodiversity and climate emergency, creating a Biodiversity and Climate Change Strategy and action plan to reduce emissions and address these emergencies. As part of our action plan, we are working with local residents and small businesses to help them reduce their carbon footprints.

We are working in partnership with Kent County Council on an innovative new scheme offering high-quality solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery storage to help reduce energy bills and reduce carbon emissions in Maidstone.

Buying Solar Panels made easy

Solar Together Kent is a solar panel and battery storage group-purchase scheme. It allows residents and small businesses to install solar panels on their homes and businesses at an affordable price.

Solar panels can help you save money on energy bills, as well as reduce your carbon footprint. You can also choose to install battery storage to help you use more of your generated electricity.

Any homeowner, landlord, or small business in Kent is welcome to register: applications are limited to 50 solar panels per property.

If you already have solar panels installed you can apply for battery storage to maximise the benefits of your existing solar panel installation.

Planning Permission

Solar PV installations are considered a 'permitted development' and will generally not need planning permission. However, in some cases, such as in Conservation Areas and on Listed Buildings, planning permission may be required. How does it work?

1. Registration: you can register for free and without obligation at Solar Together | Maidstone District Council. To register, you simply provide details about your roof, such as its size and orientation.

2. Auction: a reverse auction will be held where our pre-vetted solar installers will submit bids for the work. The more people that register, the better the deal should be for each household. The installer with the most competitive package will win the auction.

3. Personal recommendation: you will be emailed your personal recommendation based on your registration details. This includes your costs and specifications of your system.

4. You decide: the decision is then yours whether you want to accept your recommendation. There is no obligation to continue. We will let you know how long you have to accept your recommendation and update you before the scheme closes.

5. Installation: if you accept, the winning installer will contact you to survey your roof and set an installation date.
