Become a Tree Guardian

Trees are among the borough's most valuable natural assets. They clean the air we breathe, provide shade during periods of extreme heat, capture carbon, support wildlife, reduce flooding and make our neighbourhoods healthier and more attractive places to live.

Tree Guardians are local residents, businesses, schools and community groups who want to help care for, protect and celebrate trees across Maidstone.

Whether you already know a lot about trees or simply care about your local environment, becoming a Tree Guardian is a simple way to make a positive difference.

Why Trees Matter

- Trees provide a wide range of benefits to people and nature, including:

- Absorbing carbon and helping tackle climate change

- Cooling streets, parks and neighbourhoods during hot weather

- Supporting birds, bats, insects and other wildlife

- Improving air quality

- Reducing flood risk by slowing rainfall and helping water soak into the ground

- Enhancing mental wellbeing and encouraging outdoor recreation

- Making Maidstone a greener, healthier and more attractive place to live and work

What Does a Tree Guardian Do?

There is no minimum commitment and you can get involved as much or as little as you wish.

Tree Guardians can:

- Water newly planted trees during dry weather

- Help care for young trees by removing litter and checking tree guards

- Report damaged, diseased or vandalised trees

- Record notable trees and local wildlife observations

- Share photographs and stories about local trees

- Create habitats that support wildlife around trees

- Raise awareness of the benefits of trees within your community

- Support local tree planting and woodland projects

- Encourage neighbours, schools and community groups to get involved

- Learn more about tree identification, ecology and woodland conservation

What Tree Guardians Don't Do

For safety reasons, Tree Guardians should not:

- Carry out pruning or tree surgery

- Undertake work at height

- Use specialist equipment

- Enter restricted sites

- Attempt to deal with dangerous trees

Any safety concerns should be reported directly to the Council.

Who Can Become a Tree Guardian?

Everyone is welcome.

We encourage applications from:

- Residents

- Schools and colleges

- Businesses

- Community groups

- Families

- Volunteer groups

You do not need any specialist knowledge or experience.
