Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
MBC requires a 20% contribution toward biodiversity net gain (BNG) for development, see our BNG webpage.
We have recently identified deficiencies in green space access, mapped against socioeconomic indicators to prioritise future requirements in planning redevelopment.
Biodiversity Duty
Maidstone Borough Council are required to report on our actions toward Biodiversity, firstly through consideration (strategies & action plans), and secondly through our actions (those that have been delivered, as well as planned for the future. See more information on our reporting on our Planning webpage.
Local Nature Recovery Strategy
Under the Environment Act 2021, all public authorities in England have a legal duty to have regard to Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS). Please see The Kent & Medway Local Nature Recovery Strategy for full details on the strategy. Since it's launch in November 2025, MBC have implemented changes including diversifying our tree planting in the Borough to consider less common native species as well as heritage fruits; and launching 'Swift Streets' , the campaign targeting the Penenden Heath colony of Swifts through the distribution and installation of 50 free swift boxes within the colony epicentre.
