Solar Panels

Solar electricity panels, also known as photovoltaics (PV), capture the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity that you can use in your home.

By installing solar panels, you can generate your own renewable electricity. A solar PV panel consists of many cells made from layers of semi-conducting material, most commonly silicon. When light shines on this material, a flow of electricity is created. The cells don’t need direct sunlight to work and can even work on cloudy days. However, the stronger the sunshine, the more electricity generated.

Buying Solar Panels - made easy

Solar Together Kent is a solar panel and battery storage group-purchase scheme. It allows residents and small businesses to install solar panels on their homes and businesses at an affordable price.

Solar panels can help you save money on energy bills, as well as reduce your carbon footprint. You can also choose to install battery storage to help you use more of your generated electricity.

Any homeowner, landlord, or small business in Kent is welcome to register: applications are limited to 25 solar panels per property.

If you already have solar panels installed you can apply for battery storage to maximise the benefits of your existing solar panel installation.

Planning Permission

Solar PV installations are considered a 'permitted development' and will generally not need planning permission. However, in some cases, such as in Conservation Areas and on Listed Buildings, planning permission may be required. For planning advice please visit Apply for planning permission | Maidstone Borough Council

How does it work?

1. Registration: you can register for free and without obligation at Solar Together | Maidstone District Council. To register, you simply provide details about your roof, such as its size and orientation.

2. Auction: a reverse auction will be held where our pre-vetted solar installers will submit bids for the work. The more people that register, the better the deal should be for each household. The installer with the most competitive package will win the auction.

3. Personal recommendation: you will be emailed your personal recommendation based on your registration details. This includes your costs and specifications of your system.

4. You decide: the decision is then yours whether you want to accept your recommendation. There is no obligation to continue. We will let you know how long you have to accept your recommendation and update you before the scheme closes.

5. Installation: if you accept, the winning installer will contact you to survey your roof and set an installation date.
