At the Council: Lead by example by transitioning Council-owned and operated vehicles to electric alternatives, embedding sustainability into procurement and operational practices.

Council Initiatives

  1. Fleet Electrification Low Emissions Strategy and Low Emission Strategy Action Plan (2017), and the Green Fleet Strategy, the Council commits to progressively replace its fleet with electric vehicles, prioritising high-usage and high-impact vehicles to maximise emissions reductions.
  2. Alternative Fuel Policy for Suppliers
    Introduce procurement requirements that encourage suppliers to adopt low-emission vehicles and alternative fuels, ensuring alignment with the Council’s sustainability goals. (Draft in progress).
  3. Integration with Strategic Planning
    Embed EV infrastructure considerations into local planning policies and development frameworks to future-proof Maidstone’s transport network.

  4. Council Car Parks
    Expand EV charging provision across Council-owned car parks to support staff, fleet, and public use, ensuring accessibility and reliability (in the EV Operational Roadmap from Parking Services).

In the Borough: Enable and encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) by residents, businesses, and visitors through infrastructure development, policy support, and partnership working.

Borough-Wide Initiatives

The Council will work collaboratively with partners and stakeholders to deliver:

  1. Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund
    Support Kent County Council’s LEVI programme to increase on-street charging availability for residents without off-street parking.
  2. Bus EV Charging Infrastructure
    Facilitate the deployment of charging points for electric buses, contributing to cleaner public transport options (Kent County Council Bus Service Improvement Plan (2024) Proposal EAQI 1 )
  3. Public EV Charging in Council Car Parks
    Continue appropriate investment in public charging facilities across Maidstone Borough Council car parks.
